Prabal Gurung for Target

For the past ten years, Target has had tremendous success with its designer collaborations. Last year, the MIssoni collaboration sold out within the first day and even shut down the store’s website. After much anticipation, it is finally time for a new collection, brought to us by celebrity favorite Prabal Gurung. The eighty piece collection will be available in stores February 10th.

Who is Prabal Gurung? Any avid Vogue reader will tell you that in the fashion world, Gurung is recognized for his unique prints and structured designs. He has dressed some of the classiest celebrities and figures, such as, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Jennifer Lawrence. In general, however, he is not as well-known due to his high fashion designs and are not within the average person’s price range. Hopefully this lower line will help Gurung branch out and gain the recognition he deserves.

Poppy floral prints, ruffles, and A-line dresses are just a few reoccurring themes in the new Target collection. The line also consists of strappy sandals, silver bedazzled jewelry, and an aqua leather bomb jacket, which  will all cause heads to turn. The overall vibe of the collection is romantic and modern, but still evokes a light, happy feeling that makes it perfect for Spring. According to fashion design student, May He (2015), the “collection is very cohesive and the color palette is very bold, bright, and reflects the 80s.”

Gwen Stefani: Rocker Chic in Vogue

On the January 2013 cover of Vogue, you will find the beautiful Gwen Stefani ravishing in a look by Saint Laurent developed by Hedi Slimane as part of his debut for his first ready-to-wear collection for the label. The singer’s outfit is nothing short of an obsession and fits her perfectly.

Stefani has not been featured on the publication since 2004, enabling writers and photographers to catch up with the star. The article focuses on differentiating Stefani from other singers and pop stars from today. She talks about how she handed her clothing line, L.A.M.B., over to Paula Bradley after her son, Kingston, started kindergarten.

However, the most important aspect of the article focused on how Stefani finally made the move away from her Japanese Harajuku-inspired music and backup dancers and back into the world of punk, ska, and rock. Gwen admits to Vogue writer, Jonathan Van Meter, that she has always felt special being a part of her legendary group, No Doubt. She stated, “I feel like we’ve always been in our own little lane. Never fitting in. Never a nineties grunge band, never a pop girl band. And it’s the same now. I did the solo thing, but I felt like I was trying to play a character in a way, this Alice in Wonderland pretend version of myself. But this, being in No Doubt, is really who I am.”

Find Your Perfect Party Dress

With December quickly passing by, we must prepare for our upcoming holiday festivities. ‘Tis the season to break out some of your prettiest party dresses. We all need that special dress, whether it is brocade, lace, sequined, or just an LBD. Lavish fabrics, such as brocade and velvet, ooze festiveness.

Choose a silver brocade A-line dress for a classic, yet glamorous vibe, or opt for an attention-grabbing red velvet number. You will not only make your mark at the party, but also pay tribute to fashion history.

One can never go wrong with lace, which is another timeless style. Opt for either black or jewel-toned hues, but be wary of pastels, as they tend to have a Spring season vibe.

A must for New Year’s is sequins. This is the one holiday when it is acceptable to go overboard with all that glitters. Shine like a star in slinky, fitted dresses with gold, silver, blush, or even rainbow palettes.

Last, but not least, is the Little Black Dress (LBD). One of the most versatile options, the LBD is a closet staple for every girl. Since black is universally flattering, any style or texture will work.

Once you have found the perfect dress, it is time to accessorize. Accessories are truly what makes or breaks your look, so choose wisely. Statement necklaces are a fail-safe option. In jewels and precious metals, they can give an LBD just the right amount of sparkle. or can add even more pizazz to a textured dress. Add a chic clutch to polish off any ensemble. Satin, velvet, and beaded versions during this season screams “holiday”, not “homecoming”.

Your look will not be complete without a pair of killer heels. If your dress is grey or black, choose colored shoes for a bold twist. If your dress is colored, stick to metallic, black, or nude options, unless you are feeling daring. Popular styles includes glittery stilettos, satin pumps, and sleep ankle boots.

Whether you are attending a family gathering or a New Year’s Even party, the holidays are at ime to step out of your comfort zone and into the perfect party dress. It is the “greatest time of the year”, so don’t we all deserve to dress luxurious?

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

"All angels standing by, we are ready to go."

Another year of our favorite and much anticipated show of Victoria’s Secret angels hitting the runway has come and gone. The fashion show has truly outdone itself this year. The show consisted of themes ranging from a circus act, pop culture, retro calendar girls, diamonds and lace, to angels in bloom. The creativeness of the runway and most importantly, the amazing outfits were once again memorable.

Along with these themes, the most extravagant element was when the angels walked out onto the runway that was designed as a Hollywood “Secret Studio”. Shining stars hung down from the ceiling giving off an Old Hollywood couture appeal. As if the set was not enough, the outfits were outrageous. The models had outfits and wings dripped with gorgeous Swarovski jewels and beading that stood out amongst the other themes. Feathers, of course, were a large part of this section as certain outfits were covered in them even down to their heels.

The real eye catcher were the fabulous statement pieces of jewelry that completed each look. These outfits truly displayed the hard work of artisanship and details that were put into each piece for this fashion show. With this being said, the outfits are perfect examples of what couture is. As years pass, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show never fails to disappoint. The show is not only for enjoyment and advertisement, but for those who have an eye for fashion to take away the craftsmanship and creativity of design from it. If you did not tune into the show, click here to go behind the scenes of what was put into designing this year’s outfits.

Students Create Products For A Cause

The Survey of Global Products course at our university focuses on teaching the business of fashion and all the different elements that go into producing and selling a product. Students taking this class have been working to their core all semester to create products to sell to their peers.

The students formed “corporations” to create and sell a product for under $20. Each group contained five or six people, each of whom were assigned to work in a specific field. These departments included President, Vice President, Administration, Manufacturing, Marketing, and Merchandising. THe group worked together to come up with an idea, shop for materials, produce the product, cater it to the target market, and ultimately sell it, all while documenting the costs and time that went into it.

Fashion Industry Management and Fashion Merchandising students created a variety of hippie-chic merchandise which included scarves, headbands, bags, and dreamcatchers. This past Wednesday, the products were sold in Downs Auditorium. All of the proceeds benefited ChemoClothes, an organization dedicated to help the fight against cancer. The students involved feel honored to contribute to such an important cause, and should be proud of all of their hard work and dedication that went into the project!

Tommy Ton

Designers craft their works to be shown during fashion week shows and in publications, with the guide of stylists who select pieces from the collections to create ensembles. But we tend to forget the person behind the lens. The photographer enables readers and viewers to be in awe of the designs and styles seen in publications and on the streets. Without them, we would be at a loss of inspiration and admiration of our beloved fashion industry.

Photographer Tommy Ton is infamous as founder of fashion blog Jak & Jil, as well as the brain and eyes behind the breathtaking images of detailed looks or accessories during fashion week for Style.com and GQ.com. Ton’s high resolution photos are direct images of his vision and his love for fashion, which was sparked by Tom Ford. The photographer’s passion came from the introduction to film and recordings when he was asked by his sister to record FashionTelevision. Ford was featured on a segment and Ton was amazed and taken away from the designer’s ability to discuss with passion about his designs.

Ton’s blog originated as a lifestyle media outlet for the people of Toronto, his hometown, but soon gained recognition by local Lynda Latner. Latner, founder of Vintage Couture, hired Ton to publish images for her company and Ton soon found himself capturing images on the streets during fashion week in Paris and London.

Taking a different approach from original photography of head-to-toe shots of outfits, Ton began taking candid photos with a landscape background with a high focus on the details of the outfit, whether it be an intricate detail on a shoe or the contrasting colors and elements of a piece of clothing. His tactic and focus has led him to become a revolutionary blogger, with a breakthrough career enabling him to be acquainted with legendary figures within the fashion industry.

Paris Street Fashion: Color Trend

Paris is one of the fashion capitals of the world, so one can expect to see amazing, eclectic styles all around the city. One thing that has been a major trend in the streets of Paris is the color of electric blue. This color is much different from the typical neutrals, oranges, and reds that we are used to seeing this time of year. I love this shade of blue because of it’s ability to feel wintery even with its bright hue.

Anna Sui for Coach

Bohemian designs created with edgy charm by Anna Sui has been incorporated into the designer’s collaboration with Coach this year to redesign the handbag brand’s classic duffel.

The Dragonfly duffel and Fleur-de-Lis duffel are must-haves. Reed Krakoff, Coach’s Creative Director, wanted to make these bags as Sui as possible. Leather dragonflies, tassels, and multiple pockets make these bags fun and practical for holding all of your every day items. Sui raves about working with Coach, describing her experience as a “dream job because they have all the facility to do anything that you ask for”. Maison Martin Margiela for H&M

Another one of H&M’s fabulous collaborations was released on November 15th, this time with Maison Martin Margiela. According to a press statement, H&M was looking to replicate the most “representative” pieces of the label’s archive, so each item’s tag will show which season it came from. And as always, we can expect great prices from H&M.

CFDA & Vogue Fashion Fund Awards Greg Chait

For the past nine years, the Council of Fashion Designers of America led by Diane von Furstenberg and Anna Wintour’s Vogue have collaborated to award a member within the fashion industry to jumpstart their career. The prize is awarded to one of ten finalists and consists of $300,000 and a yearlong mentorship with an established and legendary member of the industry. Past winners have included Joseph Altuzarra, Alexander Wang, and Proenza Schouler and this year, the award was given to Greg Chait.

Greg Chait is the founder of The Elder Statesmen, which is known for its soft, luxurious textiles. The designer explains to Women’s Wear Daily that his brand’s name reflects personal moments that he endured in his life, ranging from simple gifts to the loss of his brother, Paul. The label interprets the idea of one of “high rank in society” and carries on the legacy of Paul, nicknamed “The Mayor”, whom Chait lost to in a Phoenix shooting in 2008.

The collection consists of Baja sweaters, Chilean fishing jackets, along with hooded scarves. The purpose of producing such items was to provide clothing and accessories that people like to use daily. Knowing who makes the items, where they are made, and how they are made reflects the integrity of Chait and his passion to create the best quality ensured and personal products for the consumers. Although the brand consists of steep-priced selections, Chait has no desire to lower the prices. Comfort is the most important aspect in clothing, therefore it should not be disposable, further explaining the designer’s use of high quality, handspun yarns and textiles.

Celebrity Style: Solange Knowles

Solange Knowles has made a name for herself, outside of being known as Beyoncé's younger sister. She is a mother, singer, producer, and DJ. In my eyes, she is a fashion icon; her whole look is inspiring and never disappointing.

Knowles’ style is unique, carefree, and urban. She is often wearing bright, vibrant colors with a variety of patterns whether is be casual, glamorous, or subtly sexy. Mixing patterns is not something that everyone can pull off or come about but Solange rocks it. Her outfits reflects her personality.

I have always been a fan of her because she dresses the way that she desires and does not follow trends or opt to please others. Solange is someone I look up to in the fashion industry and when she wears her natural hair, it goes perfectly with her style.

Trend Report: Sneakers

If there is one thing all of us who love fashion can agree on, it would have to be that we all love shoes! Lately, many people have been opting for fresh kicks instead of their heels and loafers for a daily look. If you are looking for a way to expand your wardrobe, purchase a new pair of trendy sneakers that will be sure to never disappoint.

These black and gold sneakers from the Michael Kors Holiday Collection would look fabulous with black liquid tights, a black top, and gold accessories for a more dressy ensemble. (These will be on my wish list this year.)

Steve Madden introduced these studded sneakers in taupe that would look great if paired with an oversized, striped sweater and skinny jeans. Studs being a big trend lately is another reason to get this product, for two trends in one.
